LH Surges
LH stands for the Luteinizing Hormone which is essential for both males and females trying to reproduce. LH surges are a burst of this hormone that causes the egg to leave the ovary and make its way towards the uterus. Surges don’t last very long, usually 24-36 hours as the amount increases dramatically just before a woman’s most fertile day of the cycle. This hormone is always present in human urine and this is the main reason why ovulation tests look for this specific hormone.
Tests
If you’re testing for your LH surge, many people will tell you to test in the morning hours since this is the time of day other fertility tests are done. But in fact you will probably receive better results if you test in the evening hours since there is more LH in your urine, as your body produces this hormone throughout the day. These tests can be bought over the counter at a reasonable price, but understand that certain prescription drugs can affect the results of the test. However, if you’ve been testing and testing and feel like something’s wrong try testing in the a.m and p.m hours to gain better results.
